Boat Shows Get the Word Out on Boating Safety

by Wayne Spivak

Members of a Delaware Flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary have been busy spreading the word about Recreational Boating Safety by making contact with tens of thousands of boaters. "We did 31 boat shows this year and talked with over 170,000 boaters," says John P. Bernath, the Staff Officer for Public Relations of Flotilla 12-05, in the Fifth Northern Region of the Auxiliary. "Each boater was provided with literature on safe boating, pollution, Waterway Watch, among other hand-outs." (PRWEB) January 8, 2005 -- The Coast Guard Auxiliary, for the past 66 years, been dedicated to decreasing accidents and deaths on America's waterways by educating the public in safe boating. Public outreach at boat shows and other venues where boater's gather is just one of the many ways the Auxiliary educates the boating public. "We provided several clip-boards for various functions that the boating public may be interested in", said Bernath. "Among these were our free Vessel Safety Checks. We had to constantly add paper to this clip board. It seems our message is working... the public wants their waterborne equivalent of MTV, our VSC!" For more information about Vessel Safety Checks, go to www.safetyseal.net or contact your local Flotilla by either visiting the USCG Auxiliary at www.cgaux.org or contacting your local Coast Guard unit. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteer civilians who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation's waterways, in the air, in classrooms and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education. The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and re-designated as the Auxiliary in 1941. Its 35,000 members donate millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions. The release is available at: http://www.auxpa.org/releases/rbs/010705.html
