Power Boats are just a ton of fun!

by Terry Price

Power boats are almost infinite in design and construction. Covering a wide category, you could write a book on the topic. There are over 53 various categories of power boats and within each category there are several different models and designs. Some of the more common boats you see on the lakes in the summer are such craft as aluminum boats, bow-rider boats, cruiser boats, ski boats, fishing boats, high-performance, and of course, an all-time favorite, the houseboat. Of course, depending on what your budget is, boating can be taken to almost any extreme from the very small inflatable craft to the super yacht. If you are a weekend fisherman, you will most likely have a 12 to 20-foot long aluminum boat with a 10 to 50-horsepower motor along with a trolling motor. This very popular boat is an excellent size for most lakes and will serve you well for lake fishing.

The inflatable boat is extremely versatile and a fun boat to have. It can be used as a life raft for a larger boat and you can usually add a small motor for power. How about a pontoon boat which has a hull constructed of round tubes (called sponsons). They are attached to the outside bottom edge of a large flat deck. How about an aft-cabin boat? This fast-cruising boat has a lot of usable living space and makes for great family outings. Jet boats use a conventional hull and are usually powered by inboard engines. They have a water pump that works like a jet drive on a personal watercraft. This fun boat runs fast and furious!

Center-console boats are a multi-use boat with a cockpit that is as large as the entire hull. This is commonly used in offshore fishing. Then, of course, you have the personal watercrafts one known as the jet ski. Found on lakes, these remarkably fast and agile units are great fun for the whole family and can carry two or more passengers. If you are considering buying one, think hard about what your use will be and what you enjoy the most, then select the category of boat that fits your style. It's that simple!
